HIWA Initiative

The aim of the HIWA initiative is to provide sustainable solutions for refugee communities that are driven by refugees for refugees' development in line with the latest Worldbank report:

The HIWA initiative's main objectives are to: 

·       Raise international awareness and increase funding for the refugees through international donor programs providing meaningful and sustainable human development in the camps.  

·       Develop refugees by offering an extensive vocational training curriculum focused on healthcare, education and agriculture whilst increasing level of school-aged children in formal education.

·       Provide a sustainable livelihood to refugees in coexistence with their respective host communities.

·       Work with municipalities and government stakeholders to develop qualified workforce within refugee communities beneficial for the economy without undermining opportunities for the local workforce. 

·       Raise women engagement and participation in the refugee communities

·       Retain and nurture the refugee communities' heritage and handicraft skills

We plan to achieve the above stated objectives through the following programs:

4 Art and Craftsmanship Program

5 Leadership and Management Program (focusing on women empowerment)

6 Investment and Micro Finance Program

      In order to be able to implement the HIWA initiative effectively, a group of program stakeholder representatives shall conduct a Joint Assessment Mission (JAM) according to their objectives in their respective program. This will help to establish a baseline picture of the overall situation to sustain a more program specific set of data alongside an overview on the general camp conditions and needs of the camp based refugee communities. Assessments will be conducted through a mix of focus groups, key interviews and random samplings for surveys in coordination with the camp management. Assessment teams will be organised in pairs of male and female alongside translators (if needed) and field coordinators. Preceding implementation of data collection training and piloting sessions with the assessment teams will be conducted to ensure full understanding and correct potential misinterpretations. 

      Stakeholders of the HIWA initiative shall specifically consider providing support for the development of economic activity in and around the camps to improve the livelihood of the camp based refugees. Developing human capital for sectors such as healthcare, education and agriculture are of particular importance and vital to address longer term needs of the refugee population. 

      Review and Analysis: Data can be collected using smartphones, enabling data entry directly during interviews and surveys. The final database is reviewed to identify and exclude outliers and any potential errors for specific variables. Where observations for specific variables were determined to be unreliable, these will be excluded from the analysis. Data analysis will be conducted quantitative and qualitative presented at two levels both in graphics and narratives triangled with field observations and secondary data review, to provide analytical depth to statistically significant findings to help orient future actions and provide reliable recommendations for final implementations.
